Memluk Sultan's Wife Khund Al-Kubra, A Ramazanoglu

I bet none of you knew that Memluk Sultan Faraj Barkuk's wife is a Ramazanoglu!

The story goes that the Memluk Sultan feared the power of the Ramazanogullari and especially Emir Ibrahim II, so the Memluk Sultan in Egypt wanted the Ramazanogullari (sons of Ramadan) to be his allies, so he asked the hand of his daughter in marriage.

This old drawing reportedly depicts the Sultan Barkuk Masjid and the Mansion of Khund Al-Kubra behind it.

He gave her a mansion for her dowry attached to the Sultan Barkuk Cami next to Masjid Muhamad Ali in Cairo.  The mansion later became a Khanka (a safe haven for poor women with nowhere to go).

Today when visitors enter the Khankah, they will find inside 3 tombs, one of them is for Sultan Faraj Barkuk, and another for Khund Al-Kubra (a Ramazanoglu and our great...great aunt)!

Many Ramazanoglu ladies married rulers and noble men throughout the region, it was a strategy to avoid conflicts, and many Ramazanoglu men did the same, and our noble blood extends to numerous noble families beyond the princedom borders.
